I rarely use extensions or plug-ins on web browsers. I’m pretty satisfied with Safari and it’s functions, the only Safari-specific plug-in I used in Safari 4 was ClickToFlash, since Flash makes the fans on my MacBook Pro go so fast that it could fly away.

However, since Safari 5 has native support for extensions, I decided to take a look and see if there was anything interesting. I decided to share the ones I like, which I found on a tumblelog called Safari Extensions.

The first one is called Gmail Checker, which looks for new mail on my Gmail account. Normally I would use Apple Mail to check my mail, but I also use this laptop at work where SSL doesn’t work. Also, I’m already running one mail-client for my work-mail so it felt overkill to setup one more. So now I’m using the web interface, which works fine.

The second extension is called GReader, which looks for new entries on my Google Reader account. I’m also using Google Reader Styles to make Google Reader look nice.

The last one is Gentle Status Bar which shows the status bar when you hover on hyperlinks, like in Google Chrome. There are many similar extensions, but I like this one since it still looks like the original status bar in Safari.

That’s all! I don’t need more to be satisfied with my browser. And no, I’m not using any ad-blockers. If a website has too many ads, I just won’t visit it.

Trackify updates

Since we don’t have an official blog (yet), I’m posting the latest updates on our project Trackify here. For those who doesn’t know, Trackify transforms links from the swedish music service Spotify and extends the information about the music, with data from other services like Last.fm.

Changelog, 8th April 2010

Trackify is now optimized for iPhone
Since the iPhone application from Spotify can finally open their own URL-format, we decided to make an iPhone optimized version of the website. The website can also be saved on your home-screen as a web app. Looks good!
We are also going to test this on other mobile platforms like Android and phones with less sophisticated browsers :)
All extended information is loaded with Ajax
This is to make life easier (or faster) for those who browse Trackify on slower connections.
Lyrics are now delivered by Lyricsfly
We like their API and hope that this will make it easier for our users to submit their own lyrics.
And some other smaller (and older) changes:
- Some small CSS changes (like -webkit-transition and -webkit-text-stroke) to make the website cosier in WebKit-browsers.
- You can add Trackify as a search provider in browsers that supports OpenSearch.
- Our framework has been updated and now we’re monitoring the website to find errors instantly.

…and if you want to start blogging, any kind of blogging, you should totally use it. However, it seems like a lot of people forget that their blog is still a website. Most of your visitors may be Tumblr users using the dashboard, but there’s still people using RSS och just visiting your website.

So please try not to talk to the dashboard :)

The STRICT theme on tumblr, I would like to remove the words below the title. Is it possible?

As I said earlier, I’ll probably add a checkbox for it in a future update. However, it’s already now possible to change the theme however you want, all you need is some basic HTML knowledge. You’ll find the source code by pressing “Use custom HTML” under the “Theme” menu.

on your tumblr theme ‘strict’ is there any way to get rid of the text at the top, underneath the main title?

I’m planning to add more options to Strict in the near future. I get this question pretty often and it should be possible with the new features in Tumblr’s Theme API.
